Jewelry Care & Cleaning
Jewelry Repairs
CJ Designs’ jewelry is created and designed to withstand normal wear & tear; however, things can happen to your favorite pieces of jewelry! If your jewelry needs to be repaired within the first year due to a defect, there will be no charge for repair. However, sometimes jewelry breaks because it gets snagged, or is subject to abrasive chemicals which may damage the item; in these cases, we will do our best to make such repairs for a small charge plus shipping fees.
If your jewelry breaks, keep as many beads as possible. Sometimes beads are lost and may be difficult to replace; again we will do our best to find a replacement to restore your jewelry.
Gemstone Care
Pearl Care Tips
If you have heirloom quality pearls, they should be re-strung every two years, particularly if they are worn frequently! We do not repair pearls that are knotted or strung on silk thread; this is a specialty service offered by many fine jewelry stores.
Diamond Care Tips
Diamonds and precious gemstones with gold settings should also be inspected annually to check that the prongs are holding the gemstone in place, to avoid losing the gemstone. Prongs are usually designed to withstand a lot of daily wear and tear, but they do wear down and get thinner over time. Eventually, a thin prong may snag or break and the gemstone could easily be lost. Most fine jewelry stores will inspect your ring at no charge; the cost to have prongs re-set or strengthened is far less than you may think and well worth it to avoid losing a precious gem!
Cleaning Silver Jewelry
- Clean your silver jewelry with a mild solution of soap and water.
- Dish soap works well.
- Dry with a soft cloth.
- For more stubborn dirt use a soft brush or a toothbrush.
- Store your silver in a cool, dry place.
- Wrap pieces separately inside a soft cloth to prevent scratches and reduce tarnishing.
- Use a tarnish-resistant pouch, especially if you live in a moist or corrosive atmosphere (near ocean).
- Silver is relatively soft, so only rub silver pieces with a soft polishing cloth or fine piece of felt.
- Note: tissue paper and paper towels may cause fine scratches.
- Do not expose silver to light during storage, as this will cause silver to tarnish more quickly.
- Chlorinated water and some household chemicals may also increase oxidation.
- Rhodium plated silver may be more tarnish resistant.
- Regular soft cloth polishing is very effective at keeping your silver jewelry looking good for many years!
- Note: The silver used by CJ Designs is all .925 sterling silver; unless otherwise stated. This means that the silver is 925 parts silver out of 1000 parts total (925 / 1,000 parts). Other types of silver may have a higher or lower silver content. Thai silver often has a higher silver content and may tarnish more easily. In between wearings, keep your jewelry protected, store inside a silver cleaning cloth or with specially treated Silver strips and it will not tarnish easily.
