Bone Marrow National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP)Candice was a Bone Marrow Donor (Unrelated Donor Program) in 1980 to a wonderful woman who is alive and enjoying her life and family! “I encourage every person considering being a part of this amazing program and encourage you to consider giving The Gift Of Life! It is a fantastic medical program and really does offer an incredible opportunity of life for those patients who are seriously ill who may find that you are a match for them. What a great feeling to know that you could help someone when their chips are down in life!” There is very little pain, if any, for the donor and our bone marrow replenishes itself in a matter of days; part of the miraculous workings of our bodies. When the bone marrow is transplanted, the recipient’s body delivers the new marrow to the correct cells in their body. The NMDP has an amazing medical program offering the chance of life for those with certain types of leukemia, lymphoma, and other blood disorders. Every year more than 30,000 people are diagnosed with leukemia or other life-threatening blood diseases. For more information, check out: www.nmdp.org or www.marrow.org or visit your local Red Cross Chapter to see how you can help.
Who We Are:The Society is the world’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services. Founded in 1949, we are relentless in pursuit of our mission: to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families. What We Do:Investing in blood cancer research:Since 1949, the Society has invested more than $487 million in research. In the past 3 years, the Society spent or committed more than $177 million for research: • Leukemia research: more than $88 million • Lymphoma research: nearly $53 million • Myeloma research: approximately $36 million The Society’s research programs have led or contributed to advances such as chemotherapy, bone marrow and stem cell transplantation and new targeted oral therapies such as Gleevec. Programs include Specialized Centers of Research (SCOR), which brings together teams of scientists from different disciplines, and the Translational Research Program (TRP), which funds research with a high probability of producing innovative treatments in an accelerated time frame. Providing critical information and support to patients and their families: The Society made more than 661,000 contacts with patients and families in 2004, through our Information Resource Center, award-winning Web site (www.LLS.org) and community-based patient service programs. We connect patients and their families with experts through Webcasts and teleconferences, and provide education to healthcare professionals through seminars that extend the latest findings. The Information Resource Center, a toll-free call center staffed by master’s level oncology social workers, nurses and health educators, handled more than 55,000 calls and emails last year alone. Patients, families and professionals may call the Information Resource Center at (800) 955-4572 Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., EST or email to infocenter@lls.org. Translations are available in more than 140 languages. Advocating for issues impacting blood cancer patients: With more than 15,000 advocacy volunteers throughout the country, our voice is being heard by those responsible for legislation to fund blood cancer research and education programs. Why We Do It:The need is critical: More than 747,000 Americans have leukemia, Hodgkin or non-Hodgkin lymphoma or myeloma. Every five minutes, someone new is diagnosed with blood cancer. Every nine minutes, someone dies from these cancers.Leukemia is the leading cancer-killer of people under the age of 20. Lymphomas are the most common blood cancers and incidence increases with age. The survival rate for myeloma is only 30 percent, and incidence is twice as high among African Americans as for all other races. How We Do It:As a not-for-profit organization, we rely on the generosity of individuals, corporations and foundations. Approximately 75 cents on the dollar spent by the Society is used to advance our mission. Major annual fundraising campaigns include: Team In Training, The Light The Night Walk, School & Youth Programs, Man & Woman of the Year, Out For Blood - An Online Auction and the Regatta Cup.Where We Are:In addition to our national headquarters in White Plains, NY, we have a network of 66 local chapters across the United States and Canada. Call the Information Resource Center or log onto www.LLS.org to locate the chapter nearest you. |
